    Children's Classes

Children's classes (for ages 7-12) meet Wednesdays 4-5PM and Saturdays from 9:30-10:30AM. We now have an intermediate children's class on Thursdays, 4-5PM for more advanced children and teens (ages 12-17).

Families are welcomed and encouraged to participate in the dojo community. We have a large play space for non-practicing children and their parents. Please visit us!

Please ask about our discounts for families wishing to practice together.

A typical children's class integrates warm-ups, basic techniques and Aikido games. Students learn how to roll and fall safely; Aikido related games teach coordination, flexibility, strength and teamwork. Older children learn verbal conflict resolution, street awareness and self-defense.

Children who practice Aikido learn how to:
    • be disciplined yet have fun at the same time.
    • gain confidence.
    • handle bullies -- not become one.
    • relax in stressful situations.
    • focus and concentrate.
    • coordinate their minds and bodies.
    • defend themselves.
    • sit quietly.
    • fall and roll safely.
    • listen attentively and take responsibility.
    • cooperate with others.
    • remain in balance physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

"Avoidance of violence is the heart of aikido. Children learn not how to fight, but how to cooperate; how to resolve conflict in a positive way; how to make friends and avoid making enemies. They learn self-confidence, self-respect and the path to self-discovery. In a world increasingly filled with stress and conflict, these lessons are survival tools for children of all ages."

    Roberta K. Beach, MD, MPH
    Director of Adolescent Services
Denver Department of Health and Hospitals

"Mr. Pincus is a gifted martial artist who has spent much of his life studying Aikido and who happens to love and understand children. He creates an environment that is both exciting and safe, and challenges each child to succeed at their personal highest level by taking a deep personal interest in every child. Some children progress to considerable Aikido expertise, most increase flexibility, strength and attention, but all have fun. Martial techniques, exercises and games are all served up in a strict traditional Japanese environment with warmth, intimacy, and a mischievous smile."

Turner Osler, MD, MSc, parent and educator

" After nearly a decade at ACV, with three children who actively train many hours per week, I have the deepest respect for Benjamin Pincus Sensei. His commitment to the most basic principles of Aikido as a path to peace and harmony are reflected in his generosity and patience with the children under his guidance. To walk tall with self-confidence in this world is not an easy task when children face unprecedented challenges to their overall well-being. Through physical conditioning, social skills training, and play, I have observed each of my children grow into fine martial artists, compassionate human beings, and members of a community dedicated to the highest ideals."

Kevin Hutt, parent, educator and crisis worker

Our Children's Play Space and Family Lounge

ACV is committed to being family-friendly. We have a large play area available to children whose parents or family members are actively training in a class.

While there is no child-care staff to supervise kids, there are books, games, puzzles and other quiet activities to keep them busy while class is in session. Parents are also encouraged to sit down and relax for a few moments in the family lounge.
